Built by contractor Mr. T Avery and opened
in 1879. In 1888, four arches were added. Repairs were
carried out following the cyclone in 1900, one room
being added for telephone equipment. Complaints of
overcrowding led to extra rooms being added in 1910. In
1916 two more arches were added and the entrance rebuilt
